I'll be honest, this started out kinda slow and I was wondering why the other reviewers were so enthusiastic. Thank goodness I hung on. These letters were written over a 30+ year period and as the author's writing skills developed, they REALLY get better.It's the story of a young couple changing into a not-so-young couple. ("I always wondered why old people focused so much on their innards. It's because nothing works." ) There are jobs and family visits and cats and reunions. There are births, marriages, and deaths in both families. There are promotions and vacations and health scares. They buy a charming old house in a crummy neighborhood (now "gentrified.") They remodel and then remodel-the-remodel. ("If you like leisure time, don't buy an old house.")
What sets it apart from typical Baby Boomer memoirs is that it was written in "real time." Our memories are constantly editing and revising our pasts and we never remember exactly what happened and how we really felt about it at the time. Although their Christmas letters started as a joke and an antidote to seasonal sugar-overload, Gordon and Barbara created a record of their lives and experiences. It's a great read.

Easy read and a total delight. Hope there will be a new edition with more letters.
Just old and newer holiday letters, but very entertaining. Some parts were genuinely laugh out loud funny. Poignant too. After reading these, I almost feel I've been friends with Gordon and Barb for almost 20 years.
